From technical point of view, hydroponic nutrients pH level in hydroponics systems defines the potential of hydrogen-hydroxyl ion content of a particular solution. Different solutions can ionize into positive and negative ions. Those ions, which prevail in the solution, define whether the solution is acid or alkali. Acids are those solutions, where there are more positive hydrogen ions than negative hydroxyl ions. The pH level of acids ranges from 1 to 6.9 on the pH scale. Alkali solutions, on the contrary, have more negative ions and their pH level is 7.1-14 on the scale. The example of neutral solution with pH level at 7 is pure water, in which the amounts of hydrogen and hydroxyl ions are equal. However, in reality water may have both higher and lower levels of pH.

Maintaining proper level of pH in hydroponics nutrient solutions is important, because it affects how plants absorb and use essential nutrients for their growing. Different plants have individual requirements of pH level, which suits best for their growing. Though there are some plants capable of growing in the environment with the pH level of 5.0, the general rule says that maintaining the pH level at 6.0-6.5 (slightly acidic) is optimal for growing most of the plants. 

In order to understand what is going to occur when the pH level is elevated, it is necessary to remember a bit of chemistry: at pH level of 6.5 and higher some of the nutrient elements instead of being dissolved in the solution start to precipitate out of it and settle at the bottom and walls of the container.  For example, in the solution with pH level of 7.3 about 50% of iron content will be precipitated. With the pH level of 8.0 all the iron in the solution will be precipitated and plants will not be able to absorb it any more. That is why high levels of pH meter, at which the plant nutrients start to precipitate, are dangerous for plants and may lead to problems or even death of plants.

Liquid pH tests are easier to use than stripes, because they give more definite color, which is easier to read and define the exact pH level.

 

Digital pH meters are the most modern and technical way of checking pH level. There is a great variety of such devices on the market, ranging in size and price. The most popular pH digital meters for starter-gardeners are those made in the form of pens, which are very easy to use. Just dip the pen into the solution for a few seconds and read the pH value on the display.

 

Digital pH meters provide very accurate information on pH level of the solution. However, these devices are pretty fragile and should be handled with care. It is necessary to keep the glass bulb electrode clean and wet all the time. It is recommended to keep the electrode in special storage or buffer solution. The main thing is not to let electrode dry out. Since this electrode is the most sensitive element of pH meter, the whole device may go out of use when the electrode is damaged.

 

Besides, pH meters can be sensitive to temperature, which may influence the accuracy of the displayed pH values. To prevent mistakes modern pH meters are equipped with ATC or Automatic Temperature Compensation systems. If your pH meter does not have the ATC feature, try to check pH levels at the same time of day to minimize errors, related to temperature changes. Another recommendation about pH meters is to calibrate them regularly to ensure accuracy of the displayed pH levels.

 

Because pH meters may sometimes go out of use in the most inappropriate time, it is recommended to have some back-up option to check pH level, for example, a paper stripe or a liquid pH test kit.
